The Navy has a long and rich history in Weslaco, Texas. The first navy ship to be operational in the area was the USS Constitution, which arrived in 1846. The USS Constitution served as a flagship for Commodore James F. Austin during his Mexican War campaign. After the war, the Constitution anchored at Corpus Christi until 1840 when it sailed to Galveston to become the first U.S. warship to visit that port. Wesleyan University’s Naval Air Station (NAS) was built on land donated by Captain John Denton in 1941 after World War II ended and NAS Weslaco became one of the most important naval stations in Texas. In 1947, NAS Weslaco became homeport for Operation Neptune’s Spear, which led to the collapse of North Korea’s government and its military system; this event is considered one of history’s biggest successes in terms of defense against international aggression. In 1970, then-Captain James “Pate” Hennessy assumed command of NAS Weslaco and continued its success as one of America’s top naval installations; under his leadership, NAS Weslaco played an integral role in providing air cover for Operation Desert Storm during Desert Storm I and II while also conducting weapons tests at Mavericks Test Range near San Antonio; subsequent administrations have not spared him from criticism for operationally poor performance at NAS Weslacombe during Hurricane Harvey last year - but he remains largely unvindicated within the community hereabouts.. Today there are over 100 active duty sailors stationed at NAS Weslaco with more than 20 warships available for operations both afloat and ashore worldwide;[1] all told, The Navy has supported more than 350 missions abroad since 1945 making it one of America's most enduring security partners[2]. As part of its effort to commemorate these past years we offer below some brief overviews about each navy gift from our town: USS Constitution Museum: On July 8th, 2006 USS Constitution Museum opened its doors to visitors inside an old cotton gin on FM 1092 just outside downtown Wesleyan University! This museum features artifacts related specifically to naval service including uniforms worn by sailors throughout history as well as models of various vessels used by members of HMCS Acadia (1880), HMS Cornwallis (1901), HMS President(1903-04), USS Raleigh( 1905), USS Constellation( 1907), USS Lexington( 1912) and many others! Weslaco is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded by James M. Weslaco and his wife Ida Mae on November 1, 1882, as a farming and ranching village on the east side of the Fuerte Apache River. The name "Weslaco" means "place where people are gathered." In 1916, Mrs. Weslaco donated land to make a shopping center possible; it opened in 1935 as Weslaco Village Center. In 1960, Weslaco were merged into Arlington Heights annexed by Dallas-Fort Worth; since then, the two towns have been separate municipalities with their own governments but share an address and Mayoralty (though both mayors are elected). On October 17th of this year residents of Arlington Heights voted to secede from Dallas-Fort Worth to become their own city once again under the new mayorcy system put in place by city councilors Mike Rawlings and Ray Lopez after years of debate among residents over whether or not they wanted their own city government or annexation byDallas-Fort Worth which has always been desired by most residents

Weslaco has had several notable residents over the years including Dr. James Fenton Welch (1882-1966), Dr. Charles Easley (1907-1981), and Congressman Tom Litton (R-Michigan). In 1969, Mayor Artemas Flores became only the second Mexican American to serve as mayor of a U.S.-based city with more than 10,000 residents when he took office following the resignation of his predecessor Ralph Yarborough Jr.. Weslaco has also been home to various NASCAR events such as the Daytona 500 and Auto Club 400 which have helped support its economy over time.
