The National Guard in Weslaco, Texas began their history on Jan. 1, 1917 when the Texas Legislature authorized the creation of a guard regiment to help protect the citizens of Weslaco. The first unit to arrive in town was Company I, 2nd Battalion of the Texas National Guardsmen. On July 1, 1917, Company I and another battalion were consolidated into Company K and organized as a part of the 9th Infantry Regiment. On Nov. 17, 1919, an act was passed by the Texas legislature authorizing continuation of military service for one year after payment of $200 per month plus "$10 per week" for each enlisted man then serving in the guard regiment. A separate bill also authorize establishment of a state reserveguard regiment with no pay and only privileges similar to those enjoyed by commissioned officers in federal service. The company was reactivated on Dec 5th 1920 as Company M under command Col George W McKay and continued its history until it was disbanded on Jul 3rd 1951 when it amalgamated with other units within 9th Infantry Regiment which became 4th Brigade/9th Infantry Division
Weslaco is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,829 at the 2010 census. The name Weslaco comes from the Spanish word for "wood" and "calico." The earliest settlement in what is now Weslaco was made around 1836 by Retired Army officer José de la Cruz and his wife Maria del Carmen. De La Cruz named the settlement after his friend and mentor, General Antonio López de Santa Anna. A post office called New Austin was established in 1841, but it was renamed Weslaco in 1852 because of the growing town's size. In 1870, businessman Augustus Chapman set up a lumber business near present-day Weslaco. By 1900, Chapman's business had become one of Hudspeth County's largest landowners. In 1907, he donated land to the local school district which would later be developed into the present-day high school campus. In 1912–13 construction began on what would become the first high school in Hudspeth County - Academy School (now High School #2). Academy became an important part of Hudspeth County education history as it served as both a primary and secondary school until 1975 when High School #1 opened its doors to students throughout Weslaco Township. In 1922, coalminer Johnnie Lane mined coal at what is now West Side Coal Mine on Uvalde Road south of town. After several years of development efforts by local businesses led by banker Homan McCullough Jr., much of downtown Wesleyan Village (later incorporated as Weslaco) was built between 1930 and 1933 during what has been referred to as "the real estate boom" in Texas during that time period. Development continued through World War II with American military bases being installed nearby such as Fort Bliss and Camp Bowie; however, only a few homes were built before those installations closed down permanently due to competition from new housing developments outside of town during that time period.. This growth did not stop once hostilities ended though with many new businesses being born including chemical plant Texaco which operated from 1949 until its closure in 1979; flowers store First United Methodist Church which opened in 1967; ice cream shop Dairy Queen which opened in 1972; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s original full line department store adjacent to current day KFC across from IHOP - all within walking distance of each other making Wesleyan Village one large shopping center second only to Dallas' Northside Shopping Center during that era.; finally golf course Country Club located northeast cornerof Main Street west of Academy Boulevard across from Pizza Hut - becoming one of Texas' most popular tourist destinations thanks largely to its views over downtown Dallas

Except for a small parcel of land near downtown which is used for cattle grazing and public Works Administration office space, all other public lands are unproductive or have no use for humans except for occasional farming activities by local farmers who lease them from government entities such as NASA's Lyndon B Johnson Space Center on nearby White Sands Missile Range
