Weslaco is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. Weslaco is located in the Mid-West region of the United States and has a humid subtropical climate. The town was named after General John Wesley Ladd who fought in both the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. In 1875, Ladd donated land to make up what would become Weslaco. The first post office was established in Weslaco on December 27, 1876. When Mexicali County was created in 1907 it included part of what are now Weslaco and Mission Hills neighborhoods as well as present day Monterey Park; these areas were annexed by Hudspeth County when Mexicali was dissolved. In 1928, Hudspeth changed its name to Hidalgo County; however, because there had been no change in its borders since 1907 – including annexation of portions of Monterey Park – many residents continued to refer to their new county as "Hidalgo" even though it no longer bore that name. The townsite that would form the nucleus of today's Weslaco developed around two schools: First Baptist Church (now known as Heritage High School) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Zion Church (now known as Christmastime Children's Museum). The first school opened its doors on November 15th, 1879 while Methodist Episcopal Zion Church did not open until 1902 due to construction delays caused by a drought affecting central Texas at that time. Both schools were built with private funds which meant that they were not subject to state or federal funding which made them more independent than public schools at that time; this independence helped contribute to the success of both schools over time. In 1924, First Baptist Church became an all-male church which remains one of Weslaco's most prominent denominations today; it also served as home base for local law enforcement during prohibition years from 1923 through 1933 due to lack of other options available at the time for religious services outside of government buildings such as courthouses or jails where alcohol could be bought openly without fear of being caught by authorities In 1938 oil exploration began on adjacent ranchland resulting in increased traffic capacity along Main Street making possible development northward beyond First Baptist Church into what is now North Park Shopping Center and eastward into what is now Southpark Mall . As demand for goods grew so too did prices for gasoline increasing gas prices from $1 per gallon when it began appearing in stores across Texas beginning in 1941 until they reached parity with imported oil late during World War II On October 26th 1957 Hurricane Ike struck southern Texas causing widespread damage including loss/damage totaling $27 million dollars within just four hours span; this event marked an important turning point for Texoma due mainly because Ike severed power lines running northeast into Wichita Falls while southbound electricity continued flowing uninterrupted throughout muchDamage resulted primarily from downed trees limbs snapped off power lines creating several blackouts city officials estimated Ike would have caused between 3500-4000 fatalities if left unhealed

Weslaco is a town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what would become Weslaco were James and Laura Bird of Illinois who arrived in 1847. In 1851 they had five children: Arthur, Edwin, Laura Belle, Willie Fenton and Infantile Floyd. Over time other families also moved into the area including the Pahrumpetts in 1865 and Thomas & Jane Riggins in 1876. By 1900 there were 125 residents living in Weslaco. In 1902 local businessmen Jno Epps (1863-1941) and John Willoughby (1865-1945) bought land east of the railroad tracks that would later become Weslaco for $1 per acre ($36 per mile). Today’s downtown area began as an agricultural section called “Willow Grove” which extended to just south of US 281 until about 1926 when it cleared rainforest for development on what is now downtown Weslaco with some remaining trees from that original purchase still standing today near Third Street and Elm Street. The first store opened its doors on this location on July 3rd 1927. In 1914 WPA workers started construction of a new high school which was completed in 1915 however because of World War I physical damage was done to many churches across the country so instead Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church became operational as their ministry partner while Butterfield High School continued to be built without any students or staff served by WPA workers during WWI due to conflictskip On November 5th 1920 local citizens acquired title to 640 acres adjacent east of Willow Grove Rd between Walnut Creek Rd & FM 620 east of town limits & reorganized as Starr County Agricultural College District No 2 with Dr Pepperburgh President Dr Harry Aiken appointed Vice President effective December 15th 1920 – Present day known as “Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal College”
