Weslaco is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Weslaco is located just south of the Mexico–United States border and east of Austin. The Town of Weslaco was founded in 1875 by John Wesley Ladd and his family. A post office was established in 1880, and the name changed to Weslaco in 1903 after oil was discovered there. In 1912, a high school opened and it remained an all-girls school until 1975. In 1984, a new Community Collegeopened nearby with curriculum in business administration, engineering, information technology and health care services. The community then experienced growth when a Walmart store opened in 2006 and other businesses followed soon thereafter including restaurants such as Longhorn Steakhouse & Saloon (now known as Benny's), gas stations/convenience stores like Texaco on FM 527/Texas 249 (now known as I-35) near downtown Weslaco, homebuilders like Ponderosa Homes (now known as First Colony Development) which built over 100 homes through 2017 across several subdivisions within the town limits; finally recreational activities became available when two amusement park complexes were developed close to downtown: Six Flags Over Texas nearest by - now called "The Great American Adventure" - and Cedar Point amusement park about 20 minutes away via Interstate 35 South from downtown Weslaco off Alamo Rd./US 281 West on state Highway 183 North near what is now called "Benny's Palace." The town of Weslaco was incorporated on February 9, 1886 under the name "Wesley". On January 25, 1895 the name was changed to "Weslaco" after General John Wesley Hardin who fought in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War in 1846-48
