Weslaco, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population of Weslaco was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Weslaco were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1836. There were two Mormon settlements established in 1845 and 1846. In 1860, the town was founded by John Wesley Hardin, a Confederate general and Ulysses S. Grant's campaign manager. Hardin renamed the town after himself because he felt that it would be more likely to maintained as a community if its name had meaning other than just "Wesley." In 1907, Judge W.Harrison Oliver opened up an agricultural college in Weslaco which became known as Texas State University (TSU). The university closed its doors in 1966 but reopened as Lone Star College–Wesleyan University in 1999. Weslaco was founded on July 3, 1871 by John Wesley Smith and named for his brother-in-law, Wm. H. Wesly of Lubbock,. The first post office in Weslaco opened in 1872. The population grew rapidly from its original 2,000 to 10,000 during the early 20th century due to cotton farming and ranching. In 1920 the city incorporated as a town and experienced rapid growth due to its location near the Gulf of Mexico and railroad transportation. During World War II it played an important role as a munitions dump for the military until it was bombed by Japan on May 6, 1945. In 2006 Weslaco partnered with Comal County to create ComalCountyParks which offers visitor attractions such as beaches, museums, golf courses and other outdoor activities including miniature golfing and fishing on two designated parks located within the city limits: South Padre Island Park off I-35E exit 309B (and adjacent Gulfport Marina) and North Padre Island Park off US 90 E exit 254A (and adjacent Corpus Christi Naval Shipyard).
