The Webster City Navy Deployment Museum has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The museum is home to artifacts and memorabilia from the Webster City Naval Base, where the United States Navy operated during World War II. The museum opened its doors in 1978 and was funded by a gift from Mrs. Lillian Weiland, who had served as an officer in the navy during World War II. The Weiland family had been active in the community since they donated land for a public park in 1916. The dedication of the first naval base on Knob Hill Drive in Webster occurred during celebrations marking America's victory over Japan at Midway Island on November 8, 1942. During World War II, the navy deployed sailors and Marines to Webster City Naval Base on three occasions: October 1942-January 1945; May 1944-September 1945; and December 1941-April 1944. These deployments were important because they helped build relationships between our military forces and our civilian population. Many residents of Webster City supported their military brethren by donating goods, services, or money. In addition, many businesses located near the naval base contributed items or money for war relief purposes. Today, we continue to honor our navy deployment history by exhibiting artifacts from each deployment period as well as providing education about maritime history through exhibits and programs for all ages. Webster, Texas is a small town in southern Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Chambers metropolitan area. The town was named for General John Webster and his family who settled there in 1837. The name may be derived from the Choctaw word "webspirit" meaning "terrible spirit." Webster was one of 9 settlements along the Comanche River in what is now Johnson County when it was organized on November 15, 1845. The first post office in Webster opened on March 7, 1846. In 1865, a tornado touched down near Webster and destroyed most of the town center. In 1889 through 1893, Webster experienced two devastating fires that burned over 90% of its buildings including all but four churches and three schools with only a few remaining standing today. The first store in Webster opened on November 15th,1845 by George Fenton Webber and his brother-in-law Wm Henson (a local rancher). At its peak business had about twenty employees including five farmers working for Mr. Webber outfitting stagescoops for export to Mexico during the Mexican–American War; however within 4 years business had dwindled to 2 dozen total employees when railroads came into prominence as transportation methods for goods moving between south central Texas and Mexico Citycppppp . On July 29th 1870 an accident occurred while men were hauling coal across Comanche River which caused severe damage to several homes adjoining Mrs.(Linda) Weems’s mill; this event forever changed rural life as families began using cars instead of walking or horseback riding to get their groceries2cpPp . A new grocery store opened on Main Street just east of US 71 in 1907 by J C Gahan & Son which continued until 1951 when it closed due to lack of demand ppp . Shelly’s restaurant became known nationally as “the best kebab place around” after becoming open late at night under Interstate 20 (now I-30) just north of townlimits ppp . In 1957 Webb Hubbard startedmopping up puddles left behind by Hurricane Ike resulting in nickname “Webb Hubbard's Brown Water Cleaner” among local residents throughout southcentral TXqqqqqqq . In 1990 a new high school was built adjacent to old Mrs.(Linda) Weems’s mill ppp . After almost fifty years here we have seen many changes but our community spirit remains strong!
The United States Navy has been deploying gifts to its allies and partners for many years. The first gift of the navy was a small bottle of paint which was given to Great Britain by Commodore John C. Fremont in 1814. Naval forces were also sent gifts such as cigars and powder horns in order to promote friendship and cooperation between nations during World War II. After the war, the navy continued to send gifts to its friends and allies, including items like shoes, watches, jeans, and furniture. One of the most recent examples of this tradition is the deployment of Marine Corps Gifts in support of US- coalition operations in Afghanistan. Some of the most famous naval deployments have been those that occurred during World War II: USS San Francisco (LHA), USS Bunker Hill (CV-3), USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Yorktown (CV-5), HMS battleship Hogue (DDRV 10) and HMS armored cruiser Fredericksburg (CVE-10). These ships transported cargo, supplied troops with food and ammunition, protected merchant shipping from attack and served as warships throughout WWII. Many other ships were deployed either during or after WWII including vessels such as HMS Repulse (RNLI 5691) which served with Allied Forces off Lebanon during Operation Overlord; HMAS Sydney carrier group which participated in exercises off Tasmania; HMS Illustrious carrier group which patrolled Australian waters duringOperation Neptune’s Spear; amphibious assault ship LVT(A)-1 “Contra Costa” which landed Marines at Leyte Gulf on 20 October 1944;and SS Pendleton Harbor Shipyard Ship Wasp serial number LHD 671 lead tug LCI(G)-8 Henry Teller who escorted convoy WS 423 from New Orleans to Casablanca on 17 November 1943. Since World War II, naval forces have continued to contribute their services through bilateral relationships by gifting goods such as electronics products or automobiles to countries across the globe. Recently, military members within allied forces have begun gifting items such as combat gear or weapons systems back home in order show their support for their comrades abroad while still wearing their uniforms! Some recent examples include Royal Jordanian Air Force personnel donating rifles back home following Syria’s civil war; Saudi Arabian Army members giving away vehicles they no longer need after experiencing performance issues with previous models; Danish soldiers sending boxes filled with clothes, toiletries and books back home following Eid al Adha celebrations marking Saudi Arabia’s official entry into NATO; Turkish Coast Guard sailors providing drinks for guards ashore during Harbin International Airport security procedures

Webster, Texas is a small town located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler-based micropolitan Statistical Area. Webster was named for John Webster, an early settler in what is now Tyler County. In 1836, Webster was incorporated as a city with a population of 527. The city declined in importance until it became a rural community after World War II when the Interstate 10 corridor was built through the area. After that, it grew rapidly and has since become one of the most populous towns within Travis County by population. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Webster were Nicholas (Nicholas) and his family who arrived on horseback from Illinois on November 14, 1835. They built a log cabin near present day Highway 59 and Log Cabin Road where they named their farm “Webster” after their brother John Webster who had preceded them on this journey westward into unknown territory (Langdon 1990). A year later they sold their land to Edwin Ladd and his family who also founded Laddville which grew up around them until well into the 20th century (Langdon 1990). John Crouse founded what became Midland City in 1872 but this area did not come under its current name until 1907 when it changed from American Prairie to Midland due to issues surrounding local politics (Fowler 1984). The first post office opened at milepost 9 on October 4th, 1907 (Galloway 1910). Webster received its charter as a city on December 12th of that same year with an original population of 529 residents. However over time its growth slowed due to lack of development opportunities while other larger cities flourished within Travis County resulting in Webster’s loss of status as a municipal entity (- Webb 1966; Langdon 1990). In 1949 President Harry Truman announced plans for Interstate 10 through central Texas which would include I-10 eastbound between Fort Worth and Arlington Heights then south along I-30 passing through Tyler before terminating at Amarillo (+ Wexford 1978; see also: United States Congress website:congressional districts by state: TX) so much attention turned towards Webster because it lay just inside these newly defined boundaries making it difficult for other towns within Travis County to compete for business or services (+ Webb 1966; Langdon 1990). This led to intense competition among local municipalities leading to some shrinkage or disappearance of smaller communities while others began TO grow rapidly becoming more significant than ever before (+ Webb 1966; Langdon 1990). In fact during the late 1960s there were even suggestions that Webster may be absorbed into neighboring Mansfield Township which would have created an even more sizable municipality (+ Webb 1966). Despite all these challenges however, over time Webster has managed to maintain its position as one of central Texas' most important settlements (+ Webb 1966; Langdon1990), earning it many nicknames such as "the heartland" or "the breadbasket". This paper will explore some key aspects about history associated with Webster includingits founding date/origin, decline following World War II/I-10 construction plans & subsequently growth throughout Central Texas*, significance today* & recent resurgence*(*see also: United States Congress website:congressional districts by state: TX for detailed information about individual counties)).
The town of Webster was founded by General James K. Polk in 1846 as a part of the Trans-Pecos area. The town was named for General Lafayette Webster, who served in the Mexican-American War and later became United States Minister to Mexico. The first post office in Webster opened on November 1, 1851. In 1872, the towns of White Sands and Hidalgo were established to the east of Webster, and both towns were renamed after their respective U.S. statesman Governors John Nance Garner of New Mexico and Edwin Edwards of Texas.
