The Webster Army Museum has a rich history dating back to the early days of the Texas statehood movement. In 1845, Colonel James Monnier, who was in charge of the artillery at Fort Sam Houston, donated land to erect a military arsenal on the site. The fort was built between 1846 and 1850, and it served as an important base for operations during the Mexican-American War. In 1898, during World War I, Webster was one of three towns in rural Gates County that became part of the newly created Austin Army Air Field (AAF). The AF was home to more than 1,000 airmen and their families. During World War II, Webster AFB housed over 100 aircraft including Boeing B-17s and Boeing P-47s. Today, the Webster Army Museum is home to numerous artifacts from its past including uniforms worn by soldiers during World Wars I and II; machineguns used by infantry units during both wars; cannons from both wars; historic photos/ paintings from the AF period; as well as an exhibit about Texan history through military service.
