Weatherford is a small town located in the Unincorporated County of Weatherford, Texas, United States. The population was 2,259 as of the 2010 census. It lies at an elevation of 653 feet (191 m). The first discovery in what is now Weatherford took place on November 5, 1872 when prospectors found oil wellheads near present-day Mastin Creek. In 1902, the town was platted and named after W.H. Weatherford, one of the founders of Midland Oil Company which drilled two wells there in 1902 and 1903. The towns post office operated from 1892 to 1915; it reopened on December 1, 1915 under the name Weatherford City Council Office. In 1937 it became a part of Midland County and was renamed Weatherford again in that year. The current Post Office building was built in 1939 and serves as its current administrative headquarters. As a result of Midland County's annexation by Houston in 1938, much sawalbeige development took place within central weatherford; but much of this area has since been destroyed by natural disaster or redevelopment initiatives undertaken by Houston developers over time including: Chevron Corporation's Wolfville Project (now known as Clear Lake Energy), Hunt Properties' Deer Park Ranch subdivision (now known as Baytowne Center), gated subdivisions such as Hunt/Peters/Laird Place Developments just outside central weatherford proper - containing some 4500 single family homesites - Hurricane Harvey knocked out power to most parts of central weatherford on August 29th & 30th 2017 so extensive damage throughout entire community occurred even with extremely low winds speeds making many home repairs necessary; everything from water lines cutting off streetlights to trees heavily trembled during these powerful storms
