After his death, his son took over the store and kept it running until 1978 when it closed down due to lack of business opportunities. In 1938, J.Wetherbee donated a shotgun to Waxahachie from his ranch in Fort Worth, Texas. This donation was followed by several other shotgun donations from local farmers and ranchers during this time period. In 1963, Mrs. Lillie Pemberton gifted her pistol to the town for use as an ornament on civic buildings such as City Hall and courthouse Annexes. The pistol has been used ever since and is currently located at the Texan Museum of History & Art in downtown Waxahachie
