Lee, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a colonel in the Confederate army. The county seat was at Knoxville, Tennessee. The population of Watauga County rapidly grew after its admission to the Union and by 1865 it had reached 100,000 people. The area now known as Watauga County was first settled by Scots-Irish farmers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They built small cemeteries near their homes, scattering land throughout the county for agriculture. In 1907, Watauga County became an independent municipality with its own government and police force. The county courthouse was completed in 1909 and is still used today as a municipal center. In 1916, Watauga County made national headlines when it hosted Texas’ first “Green Grass Revival” conference attended by American writers such as Fannie Flagg and Alice Paul to promote green farming practices nationwide. The 1920s were a time of growth for Watauga County as several large municipalities were incorporations or creation within it including: Roanoke Rapids (1920), Henderson (1924), Burlington (1927), Clarksville (1928) and Lexington (1929). During this time many farms were abandoned due to changes in technology or Prohibition – making way for new subdivisions that would continue to grow through the 1930s and 1940s into what is now known as eastern Cherokee Township
In 1836, Watauga County was created from the lands of present-day Montgomery and Cherokee counties. The county seat was Buena Vista. It would be renamed to Watauga in 1881.
