The town of Waco, Texas was founded in 1836 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The Mormons were compelled to leave their Utah home after the Mexican War of 1846. They journeyed through what is now Texas and Oklahoma before landing at Waco on April 19, 1836. The group of Latter-day Saints had been led by Brigham Young into what is now Baylor University. When they arrived at Waco, they found that the area was under control of the Comanche tribe. A battle ensued between the Mormons and the Comanches, which ended with about 50 Mormons dead and many more wounded. This event helped solidify Mormon presence in what is now Texas and Oklahoma. Waco became an important center for cattle trading because it had a large enough population to support this industry. In addition, some smaller businesses developed in Waco during this time such as garment manufacturing and banking. In 1840, Waco hosted its first annual fairgrounds festival which attracted over 100 000 people. In 1851, President James Kossuth toured Waco and observed that there were several problems with local governance that needed to be addressed before he would recommend establishing a new government in Texas. After meeting with local leaders, Kossuth announced his recommendations for creating a new state government in Texas on July 1, 1851– which eventually became known as Republic of Texas (ROT). It wasn’t until November 9th of 1850 when voting began for candidates to fill initial seats within ROT due to lack of available representation from adjacent states including California (the landlocked state then known as Mexico) due to American annexation following Mexican War Of Independence; consequently making ROT effectively an all-American state governed by Americans alone instead of Mexicans or Texans only! The election result demonstrated how divided America was at this point regarding its southern border – one half supported independence while the other half remained loyal to Mexico! In 1861 Confederate troops crossed into TX from Arkansas while skirmishing near Austin & looted supplies stored at San Antonio Mills; endangering city's cotton crop & causing great public outcry leading Governor Pemberton to call off military campaign against Union forces under General Donelson!!!!!!
