The Coast Guard was established in 1917 as the Texas Rangers. The original coast guard station in Waco was located on the San Antonio River. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station in Waco was relocated to a new facility on Stonewall Boulevard. The present day Coast Guard Station is located at 630 N 21st Street in Waco. In 1964, the United States Congress authorized a $1 million appropriation for the construction of a new Coast Guard Station in Waco. This new station was designed by famed architect John Galen Howard and opened in 1966. The current location of the Coast Guard Station is one of few places on Earth where you can view live displays of marine life from an open water surface vessel. Since 1972, when Operation Coral Sea took place off Mexico’s coast, Coast Guards have deployments to both coasts of Texas every other year or so throughout the year for various emergencies including search and rescue, law enforcement assistance and wildfires emergency response tasks.

The population of Waco at the 2000 census was 10,236. The local paper in the early 21st century reported that its population had fallen to 7,500 due to an economic recession.
