From 1922-1940, there were 54 different navy deployments through Vidor during World War II including 27 amphibious assaults ashore across five countries (the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, France, Italy). Each deployment gave new life to an old downtown street corner which today can still be seen when you walk down Market Street between Commerce Avenue and Elm Street where Admiral Nimitz once stood while his battleship USS Texas filled with munitions during her 1944 invasion of Leyte Gulf; or when you go up Elm Street past City Hall towards Jameson Place where General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters were located during his 1945 campaign against Japan; or when you stand on top of City Hall Building looking out over downtown Vidor – all these places hold memories of military engagements throughout history!
