The Marine Gifts of Vidor, Texas Collection is a repository for the history and culture of marine gifts and items from around the world. The collection began in 1978 when the City of Vidor Mayor, Willard C. Smith, donated an oil-filled trunk to the Texas A&M University Library in College Station. Since then, donations have continued to come in from all over the United States and throughout the world. Some of the most notable donations include a 1938 torpedo boat model (now on display at Corpus Christi Naval Shipyard), a 1945 World War II Japanese Type 0 single engine submarine (now on display at San Antonio museum), as well as a variety of other maritime memorabilia. There are also numerous petrified wood artifacts, including USS Constitution pennants and crew attire from 1794-1865; life jackets dating back to 1892; and more. The Marine Gifts of Vidor, Texas Collection is open to visitors year-round and offers educational programs on various aspects of marine gifts and items from around the world. In addition, there is a library with special collections available for research purposes such as USS Constitution cannons found off Galveston Island! The Vidor Maritime Museum is a maritime history and culture center in Vidor, Texas. It was founded in 1978 by then-Mayor Don Armstrong.
Vidor is a town in Guadalupe County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Vidor is located on the east side of the Guadalupe River and is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first post office in Vidor was established in 1872. The name came from José Vidorio, an Italian immigrant who settled in what is now Vidor around 1830. Vidori also means "river" in Spanish and refers to the river running through downtown Vidor. The first settlers arrived from Louisiana and were primarily French-speaking Protestants who homesteaded on land that became part of Guadalupe County when it was created in 1848. In 1865, Jesse Hinton founded a sawmill south of town which became one of the most important cotton mills in Texas. By 1870, there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Vidor with a population of 3,500 people including several churches and two newspapers. In 1907, lawyer John Cramer opened what would become one of the largest law firms in Austin with his offices on Main Street across from the courthouse. A year later he merged his firm with another large firm to form Richardson & Crocker LLP which still exists today as one ofAustin's leading legal firms despite having ceased operations more than 20 years ago! In 1957, Sid Webb started construction on What Would You Do? a shopping mall that anchored by Sears Tower eventually became known as "the world's largest shopping mall". The mall attracted millions of shoppers each week and remains an important center for business activity within the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area to this day! In 1969-70 rock band Yes played their last concert at Cedar Park Amphitheatre before going into retirement; they would come back to play two shows at ACL Stadium four years later (and again at Cedar Park) before disbanding completely! That same year President Lyndon Johnson announced plans for Interstate 10 to be built through central Texas; however due to budget constraints this project never materialized! However future efforts led by then Governor Rick Perry eventually resulted in I-10 being routed thruvidornorthwestinstead! Today you can see evidence of this history by tours offered every few months that take you down intermediate blocks between State Highway 620/I-10 Annex Rd./Old US 1 E&W Loop Rd., revealing old railroad ties and other relics left behind during development!
