Vidor is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 26,902 at the 2010 census. Vidor is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1881 by John Vidor and his wife Anna as a small community on the edge of present-day Vidor Ranch. The original name for Vidor was "Waco". The first store in Vidor opened in 1881 and was operated by John Vidor and his wife Anna. In 1886, the town had its first post office and began to attract attention from local settlers because of its perfect location on the newly opened Gregg Ranch between Waco and Fort Worth. In 1889, thevidors donated land for a new town square that still stands today near downtown Vidor. Vida river crossing just south of town served as an important communication link between Waco (then known as Wichita Falls) to the east and Fort Worth to the west during those early days when most commerce took place overland through Wichita Falls or Amarillo. A new water tower was built in 1909 which still stands today just north of downtown Vidor as part of City Beautiful program initiated by Mayor Earle Briggs back then. A large cotton gin/mill called "Hank's Cotton Mill" came online around 1915 with processing capacity up to 40 bales per day which made it one of earliest cotton mills located within reach of major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth Airport now! In 1922, when Waco annexed nearby Arlington Heights, Hank's Cotton Mill became part of Arlington Heights' municipal services under ordinance No. 9784 passed by City Council on July 1st 1922 - making it one 'first' municipally owned business within Waco limits! That same year saw Harry Huffaker open his popular Hudsons grocery store inside what is now Hooters restaurant across from City Hall - introducing fresh produce into what would become known as 'The Loop'. It wasn't until 1951 when Interstate 20 were rerouted through town along present day I-30 that Hudsons closed operations & all groceries closed down except 5 current ones plus 2 old warehouses currently serving as apartments & office space: American Eagle Outfitters (opened 1957), Big Dee's Pharmacy (opened 1961), JCPenney (1960), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Store #2 (1957). All but 2 have since been demolished; American Eagle Outfitters being torn down in 2013 followed by Big Dee's Pharmacy two years later.. . . However, World War II endedVIDOR'S HISTORY: Vidor began as an agricultural village on the banks of the Trinity River after Mission San Antonio de Padua founded it in 1874 for Spanish settlers seeking religious freedom from Mexico City (then called Texas). The name "Vidor" means "sanctuary." When Mexican troops sacked Edinburg in 1836, Governor George Fenton ordered all Spanish settlement within twenty miles of Texarkana (now Austin) destroyed because they were providing refuge to Mexican rebels who had overthrown Mexico's Cámara de Diputados government that year. In 1874, James A. Vidor moved his family to what is now Vidor from Fort Worth and started building a cotton plantation near present day Bonham Road and FM 1406 (later renamed Bexar County Highway 6). By 1886, he had built four additional plantations totaling more than ninety acres (39 hectares), which he sold off over time to raise money for business ventures such as education and infrastructure improvements such as toll roads and new churches/synagogues.
