Victoria, Texas is a small town located in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 5,562 at the 2010 census. Victoria has been inhabited for over 300 years and is one of the oldest communities in Johnson County. The first settler in Victoria was Samuel J. Pritchard who arrived in 1836. In 1840, John A. Slaughter purchased land in Victoria from Pritchard and established a ranch that now includes much of downtown Victoria. The first school in Victoria was built on the corner of First Street and Elm Street in 1872 by Mrs. Cagle and taught grades 1-8. In 1884, Mr. Cagle donated land to build a high school which served all grades 9-12 until it burned down in 1962. The current building houses the Victorian High School Library which opened its doors on September 3rd, 2014. In 1886, the first post office was established at Victoria with Wm Henson as the first mail carrier and it operated until 1907 when it was moved to Sweetwater because of rail traffic congestion on I-10 near Austin (now known as I-35). In 1912, Gertrude Bonham married Drury Kemp who settled in Victoria after traveling through Central America looking for gold properties he believed were rich enough to support a settlement (Bonham had been educated at Radcliffe College where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa). Bonham organized an effort to purchase 640 acres of land east of Melbourne from James Meeksenburg (a pioneer rancher) for $25 per acre ($2 million today). The original plan called for two schools – one for boys and one girls – a church/temple/library complex complete with water tower/ pump house/, dairy barns/ pigsgery/, blacksmith shop/, gristmill/, chicken coop/. However due to financial instability caused by World War Ihtthey soon abandoned these plans and only erected some buildings: the temple; library; chicken coop; mill; blacksmith shop; gristmill; pond; cattle corral;; while others fell into disrepair or were never completed: churchyard (); milk storage (); storehouse (); dairies (); hog pen (). In 1922 an act was passed makingVictoria an unincorporated community within Johnson County with power vested within its own government rather than being under county jurisdiction like other communities located within Johnson County such as Sweetwater or Manorville (). From this point forward everything related to Village life - from voting records to zoning ordinances - would be handled by their own governance body known as "The Citizens' Committee". On July 14th 1948 three citizens representing both Village and county meetings came up with what would become known as "The Agreement" setting out specific goals & objectives for future development withinVictoria including creating more jobs opportunities throughout town while also maintaining open space & providing potable water fixtures (& later electrical service) free reign across all village blocks ultimately leading to increased population growth & development over time culminating with incorporation into the larger city of Austin upon official reannexation by Austin City Council on January 17th 1959!
