Victoria, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Victoria County. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Victoria" comes from English explorer James Cook's visit to the region in 1778 and his description of it as "a very fine country". George Washington called Victoria "the most flourishing town on my tour." The first settlers in what is now Victoria were white men who arrived around 1836 with land grants from President Andrew Jackson. They named their new home after Queen Victoria of Great Britain. In 1891, a post office was established in Victoria and soon became known for its produce and retail trade, which continued until about 1940 when World War II stopped all commerce in the area except for essentials like food stamps. In 1840, Maria Antonia Sanchez de la Garza founded a convent here to serve Indigenous women immigrants seeking to create an escape from poverty and Spanish rule on the Texas frontier. At first it was called San Francisco Convent; later it became Our Lady of Guadalupe Convent because Mexican Catholics wanted to avoid being forced out of their homes by American Protestants during Reconstruction (1868-1892). In 1896 local businessmen donated land along I-10 east of town so that schoolchildren could have access to education without fear ofbinders or beatings while attending school; this raised money enough so that Victoria High School opened in 1898 as one half of what would become Austin’s first comprehensive high school system which included elementary schools (grades K-6), junior high schools (7-12), and senior high schools (13-19). After years serving as an important stopover for travelers on Interstate 10 east through central Austin, Black Friday night traffic congestion caused the closure of both original schools’ doors on November 30th 1957 due to financial difficulties caused by increasing enrollment at both systems combined!
