The Navy has been deployed to different places in the world for over 75 years. The military is an important part of our country and its history is rich with deployments and gifts from the navy. There are a number of deployments that have occurred in Vernon, Texas. One such deployment was on December 7, 1941 when the USS Oklahoma was torpedoed by Japan while sailing off Tokyo Bay. This event led to World War II and gave Vernon its name- it became known as "the City of Heroes." Another significant deployment took place on November 11, 1941 when USS Lexington was sunk by Japanese torpedoes near Guam. This event helped lead to America's entry into World War II and gave Vernon its nickname- "The Naval Capital of the Pacific." On December 6, 1951, USS Constitution sailed into San Francisco Bay after being decommissioned at Yokosuka Naval Base. The ship had served in the Korean War and had been sold to the navy during that conflict. She was given back to her previous owner after she arrived in San Francisco Bay. On July 4, 1957, Constitution sailed intoSan Francisco Bay again after being decommissioned at Astoria Naval Shipyard following her participation in naval maneuvers off Hawaii island. She came back into service as a warship once more but this time she served as a training vessel for new officers preparing for their future assignments with the navy. This particular gift history would continue another year when USS Constellation sailed into San Francisco Bay on October 2nd following her voyage from Yokosuka Naval Base which had included stops at Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok Atoll . This visit marked the first time an American warship had ever visited San Francisco since 1846 when Commodore James Kapp's squadron disembarked there during his unsuccessful attempt to retake California from Mexico

Vernon, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. Vernon is named after General Vernon Maxwell who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as an Assistant Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant. Vernon was founded by Presbyterians in 1881 and post office moved to Vernon from an earlier location on October 25, 1886. The original store building still stands today as a part of the town plaza. The first school opened in 1892 and operated for one year before being replaced by a church which also operated for one year before being replaced by another school which lasted until 1922 when Vernon School District No. 2 merged with Hudspeth County High School to form Hudspeth County High School District No. 1 which still operates today as Vernon schools middle/high school campus The town also has a historic cemetery that includes the remains of many early Texans including Maynard Jackson (1821-1907), James Hogg (1811-1886) and John Wesley Hardin (1827-1900).
At the turn of the century, Vernon was a small town with a population of around 100 people. The community was founded in 1881 by two farmers, John and Fannie Vernon. The Vennomes were original settlers in the area and are buried in Vernon Cemetery. In 1907, Vernon became part of the new City of Amarillo. In 1912, the city built its first school, which served grades K-8. The school closed in 1979 but is still used for instruction today. In 1927, Vernon started to grow maize for local consumption. Today, Vernon has a small grocery store and several restaurants serving American cuisine.
