The military has a long and proud history in Vernon, Texas. The town was founded by veterans of the Mexican-American War in 1836 and became a garrison for the U.S. Army in 1845. In 1910, the town replaced El Paso as the capital of Texas after it was made an independent state. Vernon, Texas is a small town located in the far eastern corner of Texas. It is named after General Vernon Lee who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later appointed as United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas. Vernon has one main street and four schools. The population of Vernon was 9,236 at the 2010 census. The Vernon Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection for all of Vernon Municipal Park and portions of neighboring townships. The first settlers to live in what is now Vernon were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1845. In 1865, a post office was established in Vernon with mail carried only between Fort Worth and Temple on the east side of Mexico River. By 1887, when it became part of Webb County, Vernon had two stores and three residences. From its founding until 1907, Vernon served as an unincorporated community within Webb County which functioned as a poor farm town with few services available to its residents other than basic needs such as water supply, police and fire protection. However, due to increasing population density within Webb County over this period (the county Growth Act took effect in 1907), Vernon began to experience rapid development including: construction of new roads; incorporation into larger municipalities; more employment opportunities for its citizens; increased access to education; and improved infrastructure including public baths (1907), two churches (1908), a school house (1910),a telephone line (1920),and a water system (1922). In 1927, Vernon became an independent municipality under the name Mount Pleasant with voters passing a referendum creating an executive powers board which included five members elected by majority vote from among municipal employees/citizens/elected officials%. The board began developing plans for annexation by other municipalities while continued support was given by local leaders such as Mayor Wm Jordon who stated "It would be nothing short of national disgrace if we should let our beautiful town go down into ruins". On July 6th 1928 annexations occurred with New Braunfels becoming Mount Pleasant’s second municipality while Arlington annexed itself from nearby Tomball making Vernon also an independent city once again! This event signaled continuing growth within Vernon while providing much needed stability during times of turmoil or transition such as during World War II when many businesses closed or were taken over by federal government agencies like Veterans Affairs Medical Center or Chemical Warfare Laboratory.
