Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for over 3000 years. It is believed that coffee beans were first purchased and brewed in the town of Vernon, Texas on May 25th, 1875 by J.B. Hillcutt. The first coffee shop was opened in Vernon in 1897 by Mrs. Lillie Hitchcock and it was located on Cane Creek Road between Shields and Decatur Streets. In 1912, the University of Texas at Austin established a pavilion near the Vernon Cemetery to sell coffee and pastries to students during their morning walk from Starr Chapel to UT Austin. In 1929, Vernon became an independent city with its own government and began taxing itself! Coffee continued to be popularized throughout the United States during World War II as soldiers deployed through the area for military service. When hostilities ended in 1945, many of these soldiers returned home and started businesses such as Harry’s Coffee House which still operates today in downtown Vernon. In 1961, local businessmen Bob Snively and Don Easley founded The Cotton Club which offered gourmet coffee (served cold) alongside live music nightly inside a large warehouse on North Loop Street overlooking Highway 290/US-290 bridge crossing into Mexico City! It was here that Vernonite Norma Richards discovered her love for this unique beverage when she attended a performance at The Cotton Club by Joe Bonamassa featuring Univision Network talent! After years of research, Snively decided to open his own coffee house in 1971 called “The Nugget” which featured fresh roasted beans from his personal roastery located adjacent to The Nugget Shop on White Settlement Drive! Today, Vernon features more than just a single business operation – there are several dozen small businesses operating within its boundaries providing quality coffee products & services to its citizens!
