The ship was used to transport food and munitions from San Diego to its namesake city in Texarkana. After the war, the ship was turned into a storage vessel for materials used by the Navy. In 1955, the USS Lexington Museum Foundation was founded in Uvalde to preserve and display artifacts related to the Lexington. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson presented a plaque recognizing sailors from HMCS Niagra who served aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Texas in 1965. The USS Lexington Museum Foundation continued to operate until it was disbanded in 2007. Uvalde, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. Uvalde has been inhabited by the Hidatsa and Kiowa peoples for centuries. In 1824, Diego Vallejo founded the Presidio of San Antonio de Uvalde on what is now downtown Uvalde. In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered to American General Zachary Taylor at Palo Alto Creek in present-day Austin. Santa Anna was eventually executed in Mexico City after being convicted of treason against Spain. In 1851, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and served two terms before leaving office in 1865. On November 2, 1871, Brazoria County was established within Hudspeth County when it was split from Travis County following the passage of the Kansas–Texas Act of February 14th, 1870. The first post office in Uvalde opened on December 1st, 1870. In 1896, a new school building and gymnasium were constructed on Main Street in Uvaldo for use by grades K-12 students from both schools that sat above an old cotton gin/seed store which had been built prior to1896 by John Ayer & Brothers milliners (now part of Jarden Corporation). On July 16th 1907 a fire destroyed much of downtown including many buildings dating back to 1824-1836 such as Alamo Hall (now demolished) and San Antonio de la Bahía School (now demolished). On November 30th 1907 local doctor William Gillespie died suddenly while performing surgery at his home west of town on North Main Street; he had been president since 1901 of Gillespie’s Health Centeropathic Hospital(later renamed Gillespie Healthcare System), one of only a few medical facilities serving Hispanics west of Dallas/Houston during this time period. At Gillespie’s death other prominent physicians who had worked with him over the years included Drs James Mclntyre and John Waddell as well as Surgeon Major General George Crook Muster who served with distinction during World War I.; Lt Colonel Thomas Burt Hardin also administered first aid during that emergency Battle Of Zilker Park which took place just outside town limits near today’s White Sands Missile Range area.. The original Post Office building still stands today cornering South Main Street & Third Avenue inside city limits; it is currently used as offices for Hudspeth County government including courtrooms etc… The current gymnasium complex located east sideof downtown on Elm Street between First Avenue & Interstate 35W is also still standing although mostlyOriginal Gym Flooring Has Been Removed And Now Uses Some Sculptures And Paving Material From Previous Campus Locations To Present Day
