Gun gift history in Uvalde, Texas began with the purchase of a shotgun from John P. Murphy in 1907. The gun would become an important part of the family tradition and would be used for hunting and target shooting throughout their lifetime. In 1916, John’s daughter Mildred married Wiley Epps and the couple started a gun dealership on Highway 288. From that business, they would continue to sell firearms until 1949 when they closed their business due to ownership changes within the family. The handgun sales at the dealership continued until 1978 when all guns were sold together under one roof at the same location. That store was then closed down and demolished in 1984. The weapons that were sold at that store are now preserved at local museums or found abandoned on property across town. It is interesting to note that this establishment is where rifles first started being imported into Texas from England. For many years, it was also home to one of Uvalde’s onlygunsmiths, Artie Hargrave who worked on many of the handguns purchased by our community over the years including those from John P Murphy and Wiley Epps. Today there are numerous Gun Shows held annually in Uvalde which attracts attention from collectors around the world who come to inspect these historic firearms

Uvalde, Texas was founded in 1854 by a group of Texan Mormons who set up the town on the banks of the Rio Grande. The name is derived from United States District Court Judge George A. Uvalde, who presided over the first court case in Uvalde County. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as settlers arrived from Mexico and Central America to prospect for gold and silver in what is now central Texas. By 1868, Uvalde had become one of the largest towns in Texas with a population of 5,000 people. The Mormon community quickly abandoned Uvalde after they found no gold or silver to be mined there. However, some Latter-day Saints continued to live inUvalde until they left Utah in 1911. In 1924, Uvalde was renamed Fort Worth by then-Governor John Connally following approval from the state legislature. At that time,Fort Worth was one of three major American cities designated as military bases within the newly formed Southwest Air Force Base area surrounding Dallas/Ft Worth Airport.
