The name change occurred because at that time there were no other settlements within sight of Houston Heights. In 1881, when the railroad reached Uvalde, it became one of its main sources of revenue as well as jobs for local residents who built businesses such as grocery stores and coal mines. The millinery industry declined during World War II but has since resumed with an influx of Mexican immigrants who have brought their skills to this country. Today, with its many cultural attractions like Pioneer Park where children can play catch or go fishing in the river while adults enjoy views of downtown Austin from atop Mount Washington Observatory, Uvalde is an attractive place to live and work.
