This event led to stricter gun laws being put into place in Texas and made it much more difficult for would-be shooters to commit such crimes without getting caught or having their actions punished severely. The most recent shooting that took place within University Park took place on April 6, 2019 when two students were shot outside of an open-air shopping mall near campus after argument over something small became physical. University Park, Texas is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 97,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugarland–Baytown metropolitan area. The city proper includes the University of Houston campus and two smaller neighborhoods: Montrose and Rice Village. The region that now comprises University Park began as an agricultural area in the 1820s near present-day George Bush Interchange on I-10. A community called "Humble" grew up around this intersection between Bush Parkway and Buffalo Bayou. In 1853, control of what is now University Park passed from Humble to trustees of Galveston County who establishedGalveston County Institute (GCI) on Main Street in what is now UT's Old Main Building on Westheimer Road to teach agriculture and mechanics to farmers. In 1865, after Houston became a city, trustees transferred ownership of GCCI to Houston for use as its public school system's first high school (Houston High School Today).
