University Park is a town in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It lies along the banks of the Trinity River. University Park was founded in 1881 by General John Fayette Houston as part of a rancho grant from Mexico to his brother-in-law, James K. Polk. The town name was changed to University Park after Texas A&M University opened its doors in 1895. In 1907 the Houston Electric Railway came through University Park and built a substation and power line that ran northeast to Commerce Street in downtown Denton which served as the town's main business district until 1928 when it became known as North Campus of TX A&M university. The current campus buildings date back to 1914 and were designed by prominent Dallas architect Alfred Hitchcock who also designed Baylor College of Medicine's Main Building which is also located in University Park. The importance of education within society has always been an important factor for residents of University Park and throughout much of East Texas; accordingly, many primary or secondary schools have been situated throughout the community with excellent facilities near each other for students to attend; these include: Baylor College (Kindergarten-Grade 8), Humble School District No 1 (grades 9-12), Katy Independent School District #1 (Grades Pre-kindergarten through 6th grade), Lubbock Christian School (7th thru 12th grades), Methodist Episcopal Church - First Baptist Church & Community Center (9th thru 12th grades) and Corpus Christi ISD #5A (Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade). Elementary schools located within less than one mile radius include Trinity Valley Country Day School, Highland Hills Elementary, Spring Creek Elementary, Heritage Middle/Highschool & Oak Ridge HighSchool without any special requirements beyond those listed above. Other nearby educational institutions that may be encountered include South Plains Independent School District #2 (#3A thru 4th grades) & Westlake Independent School District #3A (#5 thru 8TH grades). On October 16, 1836, the first public school in University Park was founded by Reverend James W. Tatum and Mrs. Elizabeth Beecher Tatum with $5 from Sir Robert Peel. The School operated for one year before closing due to lack of funding. In 1839, a new school building was built on present day Market Street and the name was changed to the Presbyterian Academy. However, the school closed in 1840 due to financial difficulties. On November 12, 1845, a new Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated on what is now Elm Street in University Park and it became home to both the Presbyterian Academy as well as Methodist services until 1905 when that church moved out of town. In 1907, another church also joined forces with the Methodist Episcopal Church in University Park and this congregation called themselves United Methodist churches which continues to hold services there today. In 1910-1911, construction began on what would become the current Administration Building which housed many of UT's administrations until it burned down in 1963. The building has since been replaced by several different buildings but still stands as one of UT's most iconic symbols! In 1930-1931, construction began on what would become Robert Hogg Hall which would eventually be renamed after its namesake (the first UT Chancellor). The building served as both an administrative headquarters for UT as well as housing classrooms and other student facilities until it burned down in 1966. The Administration Building fire also helped contribute to the growth of Texas A&M University from a small agricultural college into one of America's largest universities!
