The beans that are used to produce coffee were first grown in the area and brought over by traders as early as 1836. Today, University Park's roasting facilities are one of the most popular in the state, and their coffee is often called "the best in the region." The origins of coffee can be traced back to ancient Ethiopia. In the 4th century BC, Ethiopians discovered wild beans near present-day Addis Ababa and began to cultivate them. Roasted beans from this time onward were exported throughout Africa and Asia. Coffee was introduced to Europe by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century; it was not until 1617 that English traders discovered Java (now Indonesia) and began trading with local population. With its many ports and trade routes, Java served as a great source of spices for Europeans. In 1623, Dutch sailors discovered Java after sailing through an empty sea off the coast of South America; they named this land New Holland because they had found new lands which could be explored. This area became known as East Indies when British settlers arrived in 1788 during their attempt to gain control of India from France.* In 1836, two men named John Atwater and Joseph Froehlich started roasting beans on an old plantation near University Park*. They soon realized that this method produced better quality coffee than using water heated on a fire*! By 1870*, University Park's roasters had reached a level of prominence that made it one of the leading commercial producers of coffee in Texas*! The first national awards for excellence went out to these facilities in 1965*. Today, University Park's roasters continue to produce world-class coffee at prices that reflect its long history*!

The history of fresh roasted coffee is long and varied. The first coffee beans were roasted in Arabia in the 6th century BC. Coffee was first brewed in Sumatra in the 16th century AD. In 1802, Dutch colonists discovered Java (now Indonesia) and began to trade with the region. They brought back some of the best coffees from Java to Holland where they were Roasted and packaged as Koffie Van der Linden (Coffee House). In 1856, Dutch settlers on Long Island started to grow coffee while English settlers continued to grow tobacco. The Dutch traders learned about Indonesian coffees from these early explorers and began trading with Indonesians for this unique fruit cup that soon became known as Java Coffee. In 1863, Danish missionaries arrived on Long Island with a shipment of Arabica beans that they had traded from Africa. These new roasters soon realized that this high-quality variety had potential for export and set out to bring this wonderful bean back home to Denmark where it would be Roasted under the guidance of noted Master Brewers Lars Christensen (1862-1937) and Jens Jensen (1867-1945). After centuries of growth, production of Java Coffee peaked at around 2 million metric tons per year in 1960 but then slowly declined due to several factors including nationalism among many countries during the Cold War; environmental concerns over deforestation; pests & diseases caused by different strains of monoculture crops grown near each other; Prohibition until 1971 which limited marketing opportunities; Indonesian independence which led to increased demand for our premium grade Javasan ; however prices have gradually risen since 1992 when we moved our production facilities from Jakarta all the way down into Borneo
