As the history of artisan coffee goes back to the 1800s, University Park has been a center for coffee production. The first evidence of coffee beans being roasted in University Park comes from 1868, when a small grocery store called the Dutchman’s Coffee House started trading caffeine-laden goods from Mexico. The business grew rapidly and by 1878 had its own roastery, which was soon joined by other local businesses. In 1886, John Denton opened the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in University Park and began conducting research on ways to improve agriculture in Austin and Texas. One of his initiatives was developing new methods for Roasting Coffee Beans. Denton also introduced early Starbuckses to University Park customers with his new equipment. During this time, café culture began to take root in Austin and throughout Texas as immigrants brought their unique styles of coffee into the city limits. By 1915, there were over 10 cafes located within walking distance of campus (including several that still operate). During World War II, many students at UT turned to their cafés as places to drink cups of hot cocoa or espresso after hours during wartime shortages. In 1949, UT awarded an honorary degree to Johann Gutenberg von Eschenbach – one of Europe’s most well-known brewers – in recognition of his contributions to coffee culture worldwide. In 1967, we celebrated our centenary with a series of events including lectures and tastings from Nobel Prize winners like Roberto Martinucci and Floyd Cramer Jr.. In 1977–1978 we added a second floor for retail sales which helped grow our cafe community even further. Throughout these years we have seen steady growth as our cafes continue providing quality cupcakes and drinks options for students on campus as well as out-of-town guests who come through town during academic year break or during SXSW (Southwest States Fair). The University Park community includes the University Park Shopping Center and surrounding neighborhoods. The first College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (CAM) was founded in 1892 by Drs. George M. Smith and John Witherspoon. In 1907, CAM became the first university-sponsored agricultural school west of the Mississippi River. In 1936, CAM became Baylor University's School of Veterinary Medicine when it merged with Brown University’s School of Veterinary Medicine on a national level. Today, Baylor University operates both schools as one campus under the name "Baylor University School of Veterinary Medicine." CAM has been home to many renowned professors including Nobel laureates Drs. Charles Davenport and Edward Cushing; Davis Professor Emeritus Drs. Lewis Fenton and Jens Ohlin; former President George Widespread; current President David Boren; First Vice President for Academic Affairs Barbara McLendon-Smith; Executive Vice President for Business Affairs Lynn Needham Bartholomew In 1969, Rice Carnegie Divisions moved from their original location on Green Street in downtown Houston to new facilities on Research Boulevard adjacent to Rice Stadium in what is now known as Rice Village Homecoming Drive off FM 19609 near I-10 EAST (now TX Highway 357). The Division's original buildings still stand today--the Administration Building (1936), Food Science Laboratory (1939), Engineering Laboratory (1944), Human Resources Development Building (1967), Physical Plant/Operations Building(1974), and Main Support Buildings(1986). These buildings were all designed by noted Texas architect Harry Robb with construction supervised by thenDirector of Planning Aubrey McClendon "Rice Carnegie Divisions has always been an innovative force within Houston's academic community," said McClendon during his time as director of planning

In the late 1990s and 2000s, new waves of artisanal coffee roasters emerged in California, Oregon, and Massachusetts. These companies focus on pure-bred beans from specific regions of the world, often using only manual mills or single origin coffees. These roasters are typically more creative with their flavor profiles and produce higher-quality products than traditional commercial establishments. Today there are an estimated 30artisanal coffee roasters operating in North America alone. With so many talented individuals striving for perfection, it's hard to tell which brand is truly unique - but we're confident that any given roast will be delicious!

Coffee was very expensive then and only a tiny percentage of the population could afford it. However, over time, coffee became more affordable for everyone and people started to drink it for pleasure. In 1844, Dutch traders discovered Java and began trading with India for Indonesian coffee. This new trade allowed Indonesia to become one of the world's leading coffee producers. In 1970, two Dutchmen named Peter Koopmans and Jan van der Linden founded Roemers Coffee Company in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Roemers was the first company to produce whole bean coffees commercially. The company continued to produce quality beans until it merged with Nestle in 2006.
