Air Force deployments have been a part of the University Park community for over 50 years. This tradition began when Air Force personnel moved into the area during World War II. Today, Air Force personnel and their families continue to contribute to the fabric of University Park by serving in various roles. In 1948, Air Force personnel donated a hangar and hangar lot to be used as a campus center. The first use of this facility was in 1951 when the Center was used as an Army Ranger training ground. In 1957, the Center became known as the Air Force Base Administration Building (ABB). The name change came about due to efforts by then-Lieutenant Colonel Don Newell, who served as ABB director from 1957-1960. From its inception until 2002, AFBproperty housed student residences on two sides of I-35W between FM 527 and US 290/I-45W. This configuration allowed for easy access to all parts of AFBand helped with cost savings because no extra parking was required on campus. In 2002, AFBproperty was transferred from AFESPto Texas A&M University (TAMU) pursuant to a land swap agreement that increased TAMU's enrollment at AFBfrom 1,500 students in fall 2001 to 11,500 students in fall 2002. Undergraduate housing currently occupies almost half of AFBproperty; it is expected that junior enlisted housing will comprise most or all of AFBproperty within 10 years due to continued growth at TAMU and ongoing AF deployment opportunities in Southwest Asia! The mission of the United States Air Forces Academy (USAAF AAF) is unique among American colleges and universities: it educates cadets for military service through instilling discipline, critical thinking skills and moral values within them so they can make an impact on society while wearing an American flag pin on their uniform! USAF AAF Cadet ROTC program has successfully trained more than 450 airmen and women since 1949! USAF AAF Cadet ROTC programs help prepare our citizens for leadership roles both locally and abroad! Every year since 1959 when USAF AAF Cadet ROTC program opened its doors at USAAF Base Andrews MD we have been able to send many young men off into our world with excellent careers opportunities open up for them just because they were able to complete our school’s requirements! University Park was founded in 1906 as a small community on an agricultural site about two miles (3 km) northeast of present-day University Park Village. The university grew rapidly with enrollment increasing from 1,000 in 1926 to more than 30,000 by 1940. In 1948–49 university trustees approved plans for a new main campus on what are now Grimes Road and Montrose Boulevard; construction began that year and completed in 1951. By 1960 UPI had become one of America's leading news organizations with its Kansas City bureaux located there since 1899. In 1970 Houston Rosenberg bought the majority of voting shares in Rice University from his father John Rosenberg; he renamed it Texas Southern University (TSU). TSU merged with Samford College effective September 1, 1971 to form Alabama State College District No. 2 (ASC2). UTEP also joined ASC2 on September 1 but remains distinct from TSU/Samford because UTEP offers degrees not offered at Samford or Rice universities
