Universal City, Texas is a city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 676 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Universal City was Jacob Hogg in 1829. The site that now forms Universal City was originally called East Broadway by settlers from Edinburgh, Scotland. Hogg's family name came from his father's Scottish heritage. In 1839, local landowner and Simonside pioneer Jesse James moved to Universal City with his family and began the construction of their original home on the lot where current day UT Tower stands. In 1845, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of San Antonio for $2 per acre ($10 per ha). This property formed the nucleus around which future universal city development took place. Houston named this area "Houstonville" after himself and donated it to the community in order to promote agriculture as a key industry hereabouts and also provide more room for civilians to live without fear of cavalry raids or siege warfare being waged against them by Mexican forces garrisoned adjacent to San Antonio Bayou de la Salle (now Presidio Park). On October 11th 1850, when Houston became President of the Republic of Texas following its admission into that nation as a result of Mexico's victory over American forces at Palo Alto during the Santa Anna campaign, he signed an act creating "Houstonville". That same year sawthe first legally recorded election in what would become Universal City when George Whitehead voted for John Crain as Mayor of Houstonville over incumbent James Wylie due to concerns about possible threats posed by Mexican forces garrisoning nearby Alamo Heights (). On November 8th 1850 - less than one year after independence - citizens gathered at Clear Lake Dam on Buffalo Bayou near present-day Spring Branch Avenue to ratifyHOUSTONVILLE'S FIRST OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT! All were enthusiastic about finally putting an end to years-long Spanish occupation (), although some had been waiting since before independence (). It wasn't until 1855 when George A Thomas opened up cattle country northwest of town along Buffalo Bayou - just south of Clear Lake Dam - that ranching really started taking off hereabouts; henceforth known as Tom Hill Ranch (). After many years running heavy freight trains passenger trains ran through town stopping only at Main Street Depot which served both passengers and goods cars until 1961 when Union Pacific pulled all tracks out westward between Austin and San Antonio due excessively high operating costs associated with new open-road mainline construction across those two cities alone! In addition to cattle raising, then small landowners such as Thomas continued developing wells deep within certain areas providing water for townspeople until 1906 when Bowie Oil & Gas Company drilled fuel oil wells beneath UniversalCity Creek southeast of downtown (!), initiating what has come be known as “Oil Age” development hereabouts – while other activities such as Manufacturing (cars/trucks/parts), Electricity generation (& transmission lines), Bananas Foster Hospitality & Resort development (+ hotel + casino) continue unabated today... Today there are more than 550 businesses located within walking distance or bike ride away from downtown UniversalCity! Today's UniversalCity began developing rapidly after World War II thanks largely to large investments made by veterans Affairs under Governor Rick Perry – including bringing Interstate 35 Business Corridor through town (!!!) making it easier access for businesspeople and jobs right next door – along with large inflow Of fresh talent drawn hitherby via MRT rail service available 24/7 365 days a year! That said – much like any other community caught up in rapid growth & transformation these days – there are always challenges faced with trying To keep pace with changing needs / trends... even if we can sometimes feel like doing so might be CRAP !! But overall it feels REALLY good having our own / OUR OWN BABY!!!
