Universal City, Texas is a small city in San Antonio County, Texas. The population was 811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Antonio County. The name "Universal City" comes from the presence of several movie studios and other entertainment infrastructure there during World War II.The city became a municipio in 1892 and annexed portions of neighboring Rockwall County in 1907. In 1916, it merged with Sam Houston International Airport to form Universal City-Houston airport which remains the primary airport serving Universal City today. The first post office for Universal City opened on February 14, 1892, just east of present-day Humble Boulevard and Uptown Road. The town grew rapidly due to its location near major movie theaters as well as military bases that would be used for filming during World War II. Universal City, Texas was founded on July 6, 1846 by Captain James F. Cooke as the first town in the new Mexican territory of Alamo Heights. The site had been chosen because it was a crossroads for travelers and traders between Santa Anna's Mexico and San Antonio. After some debate, Cooke named his new town after George Washington, who had died in 1799 at the age of 59 years. On November 16, 1847, the first post office was established in Universal City with John Lubbock as its first clerk. In 1850, Universal City voted to become an independent city and became one of the fifty United States cities on January 1, 1861. On December 12 of that year General Augusto Cárdenas issued a proclamation creating within Universal City limits a military district covered by him called "Alamo Heights" which included all of what is now Austin and much of today's Houston area. A fire destroyed most of Alamo Heights on February 8, 1852; however, the town remained self-reliant until 1862 when it became part of General Sam Houston's army during the Texan Revolution against Mexican rule. On September 25 that year Congress passed an act authorizing land grants to various US claimants to Alamo Heights including Universal City which received 640 acres (2 km²). In 1865 President Andrew Johnson signed legislation making Universal City an incorporated city under state law with equal representation in both houses of Congress as well as state government agencies like education and highway departments etcetera. The following year Governor Edmund Yates granted universal cityhood to all Texas towns over two thousand residents thereby preventing them from becoming annexationist suburbs contiguous with Dallas or Austin like Bexar County did to San Antonio decades later. The population grew rapidly through annexations by other towns throughout Travis County during this time but due to prohibition laws enacted by then Governor Rick Perry those annexations were annulled upon his election victory in 2006 giving back exclusive control to Austin over these annexed properties while maintaining charter rights forUniversalCity residents
