Tyler, Texas is a small town located in the Panhandle of Texas. The population was 3,813 at the 2000 census and 4,636 at the 2010 census. Tyler is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1847 by Captain James C. Cook as a trading post on the Canadian River. The name " Tyler" came from Colonel John Tyler's home county in Ireland (now Donegal). The first store in Tyler opened in 1851 and to this day it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. The city has experienced many changes over its history; most notably during World War II when it became an important munitions plant for the war effort. After the war,Tyler became known as a center for music and arts with several major theaters and art galleries opening up shop here. In recent years, however,Tyler has seen some significant gentrification with many new businesses moving into its downtown district emphasizing culture and nightlife pursuits over traditional retailing interests. Tyler, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Tyler County, Texas, United States. The population was 105,854 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Central Texas region of U.S.A., about south of Austin and west of Dallas. The first humans to live in what is now Tyler County were Paleo-Indians. They hunted and collected game on the central plains during the Pleistocene epoch some 12,000 years ago. In 1803–1804, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded San Fernando de Bexar County east of Tyler and named it for himself; he also platted what is now Tyler County. A post office was established at Tyler in 1807, and a town site was surveyed in 1830 by James Fenton (1796–1878), an American surveyor who had helped lay out Austin as its future capital city. In 1836 John Wesley Powell traveled through much of West Texas preaching Christianity to Native Americans living along his route from Colorado City to Amarillo; he called this area "the Promised Land". After his visit, Congress passed an act creating Baylor University in Houston based on Powell's recommendations; Baylor became one of the first American universities with a degree from a European university. The town site that would house Baylor's new campus was selected near present-day downtown Tyler on November 3rd, 1837 by Waco businessman James Hogg (1792–1868). On December 10th Presbyterian minister Alexander Campbell conducted services at what is now First Baptist Church (now Christmastime Lutheran Church) in downtown Tyler for 2 hours after which goods were auctioned off to finance construction costs associated with the school's founding including land grants from President Andrew Johnson (1809–1865). In October 1840 territorial Governor Garnet Coleman designated Tyler as county seat following annexation by Kaufman County; however because there was no courthouse then nor any jail facilities nearby sufficient people resided within the newly formed county to form a government under its own Laws until just before Texans voted on February 14th 1850 to create their own statehood constitution incorporating all present east Travis & int'l lands into Republic Of Texas pursuant to Act No 532 entitled "An Act To Consolidate And Unionize The Territory Of East Texas With The State OfTexas" In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Fort Worth while seeking refuge inside Lakeside Manor; more than 150 people were killed or wounded inside and outside Fort Worth before Confederate forces retreated back into Mexico leaving most everyone dead or wounded except Ewell himself who escaped unhurt back into Canada without capture or trial On May 6th 1865 Union general George Taney pronounced sentence upon Major William Hance sentencing him instead to death for federal conspiracy charges instead of life imprisonment which would have meant execution due to lack of clemency guidelines then current law Tyler experienced heavy fighting during both World Wars with many buildings destroyed or damaged including Second Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Sibley's home where he lived with his wife Vera during World War I which remains standing today as Sibley House Museum operated by volunteers
Tyler, Texas was founded in 1835 by George Tyler as the town of Tyler and Wasatch. In 1836, it became the county seat of Hudspeth County. The city of Tyler was founded in 1907.
