The United States Army gift history can be traced back to the early days of the Republic. Infantry units were formed in small towns and counties throughout Texas, and by 1875, there were over 1,000 men under arms in the state. One of the first items ever given to a U.S. Army unit was a rifle from Fort Worth, Texas on December 9th, 1875. The rifle was presented to Company C of the 5th Battalion Texas Rangers by Major General James Wainwright on behalf of Captain John Foard who had led that unit during the Indian Wars in Oklahoma.
