Tyler, Texas is a town in Bell County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Tyler was founded in 1857 by James G. Tyler as the capital of the new Republic of Texas. It served as the temporary seat of government for much of the state before Austin became the permanent capital in 1867. In 1903, Tyler became one of thirty-six "boroughs" (municipalities) within Austin's city limits and continues to be its governing body today. The first human settlement in what is now Tyler occurred around 1800 when three Russian traders named Ivanovicki built a trading post on an island in Great Trinity Bayou near present-day downtown Wichita Falls. From this outpost, they traded goods with local Native Americans and other settlers living along the Trinity River watershed north and east of them. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson appointed John Taylor as governor of New Mexico Territory to determine whether or not to grant land east of Rio Grande to Mexican colonists seeking to expand their borders beyond what had been granted under Spanish rule. On July 12, 1836, Taylor issued a proclamation designating easternmost Brazoria County – including present-day Tyler – as part of New Mexico Territory for those who would settle there on land that had recently been granted by Mexico City to José de la Torre y Valdés y Costilla for $5 million dollars (later increased to $10 million). The maps created based on this proclamation show that Houston should have been included within Brazoria County because it lay immediately south and west of Houston while San Antonio lay just northwest and east of it across Buffalo Bayou from which it could be accessed by wagon road overland from San Marcos; however, Houston was not given this designation because its founders objected to being located so close to Mexico City while also having no claim on any real estate within Mexican territory.
