The Colony, Texas is home to one of the first coffee roasters in the Lone Star State. In 1894, George Heinemann and his brother-in-law Jesse Herring started Trading Post Coffee in what is now the heart of downtown Austin. The brothers roasted their own beans and served them at their business until 1916. They then moved to a larger space on Congress Ave., where they published anAustin Journal of Coffee & Tea from 1924-1927. In 1928, Hermann Von Roll founded Von Roll Coffee Roasters in nearby Marble Falls. The company originally operated out of a single storefront and produced only Maxwell House coffee beans. But over time, Von Roll began making different types of coffee beans and expanding production to multiple warehouses throughout Austin and portions of South Texas. Today, Von Roll Coffee Roasters operates more than twenty locations across the Lone Star State. But it wasn’t just small batch espresso enthusiasts who appreciated von roll’s high quality coffee – many large companies also made an attempt to purchase some of von roll’s beans for distribution in their own stores. This included Coca Cola (later Pepsi), Texaco (later Exxon), Humble Oil Company (later Shell) and others. It wasn’t until 1974 that major grocery store chains finally caught up with vonRoll and started selling their entire line of premium coffee products under one brand name – Samuel Adams Brewing Company . In 1868, Dutch sailors discovered Java Island while on their way to India, and they began trading with local tribes for Indonesian beans. This started the Dutch-Indonesian trade which continues until this day. While there are many different types of coffee available today (including Ethiopian, Sumatra, Colombian and Kenyan), small batch brewers continue to make an important contribution to the world of espresso and Turkish coffee. They provide a more personal flavor profile than large scale producers who can often be homogenized or processed with notable results.

The Colony, Texas was founded in 1836 by the McLennan brothers. The colony was named for Captain John Fayette and his squadron of American Revolutionary War ships that sailed from Borden Bayou in present-day Galveston to populate the area. The first European settlers arrived in 1836, and soon began building a small town called Fort Worth on the banks of Trinity River. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1845, Fort Worth had become an important commercial center due to its location at the crossroads of three major wagon roads. In 1846, however, the fortifications were destroyed by Confederate forces during the Battle of San Jacinto, and Fort Worth rapidly lost its importance as a commercial center. In 1846, two groups of Swedish immigrants also arrived in Texas. One group settle near what is now Houston while the other group settled around Fredericksburg in present day Arlington County. These newcomers helped to revive Fort Worth’s economy after the destruction of its military infrastructure at San Jacinto. However, within a few years both groups had left Texas for various reasons: one group because they were cold weather refugees; another group because they objected to white superiority and felt that their new home would be more democratic than Sweden’s traditional monarchy. After several years of growth and development within Fort Worth limits – including construction of a public square and addition of schools – tensions between white residents and African Americans began to increase. This tension culminated in May 6th, 1860 when whites attacked black residents who were taking watermelons from a local garden outside City Hall (now part of Rice University). A bloody battle ensued which left dozens dead or wounded on both sides before finally ending with surrender by black opponents without any loss on their side. This event marked one point where racism became openly evident among white Texans during this time period (although there have been reports dating back to pre-San Jacinto days which suggest some level of racial resentment).
