The Colony, Texas is a small town located in Waller County, Texas. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest city in Waller County and the second-smallest municipality in Texas. The Colony was founded by prospectors who arrived in 1848 from Missouri. The town was named after Captain James Fenton of the brig John A. Brown that landed there on July 16, 1848. Fenton's group of settlers built a log cabin and began to cultivate some land around it. In 1850, they organized as a company under the name of the "First Colonization Company." They laid out a square mile (1 km2) area for development and established schools, churches, hotels and stores. By 1860, colonists had erected three buildings: a courthouse (built1860), an Episcopal church (1861) and a schoolhouse (1862). A post office was established in 1865 and remained in operation until 1974. In 1868, colonists petitioned Congress to become a state but their request was not accepted because they did not meet all requirements including having an elected head of government. As result of this request, the colony became part of what is now Waller County upon its establishment as a county unit on February 17th 1870. The first meeting of the county board took place on April 2nd 1870 with Wm Hodge as chairman and Drs J Gallagher and I Redington as members
