The Colony, Texas was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and others as a military post on the banks of the Colorado River. The guards and other employees were recruited from surrounding counties and towns. In 1847, the colony was renamed Fort Worth and the National Guard became part of that city's municipal police force. The National Guard continued to be a part of Fort Worth's Municipal Police Force until 1965 when it was disbanded along with all other municipal police forces in Texas following the passage of Public Law 89-148 which prohibited municipally funded law enforcement services within state borders. In 1964, the Texas Rangers hired nationally trained individuals to provide security for Expo '64 in Dallas. These officers were specifically assigned to protect women participants and their children who were being transported into town for that event. As time passed, more events took place outside of Fort Worth so it became necessary for the National Guard to again become an integral part of city life. In 1998, Fort Worth hosted Super Bowl XXXI which saw participation by both the NFL's Dallas Cowboys andthe AFL's Buffalo Bills receivers coach Don Shula as well as NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue who personally honored guard members during halftime show at American Airlines Center
