The Colony, Texas was established in 1836 by American settlers. The town was named for Capt. John A. Brown of the U.S. Navy, who had purchased land east of the Red River in what is now Brazoria County. The first store opened in the settlement in 1840 and the first school was built that year. In 1845, a post office was founded and later renamed Colony when it became an incorporated village. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Colony and it had a school, bank, jail and mercantile business. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas and burned most of Colony before retreating back across the Red River. After the war ended, most of Colony reverted to Indian ownership and many of its buildings were abandoned until 1984 when they were restored as part of a project to commemorate Texas' centennial anniversary.
