The Colony, Texas was home to the United States Air Force's First Tactical Fighter Wing from 1951 until its disbandment in 2003. The wing was responsible for operations of the F-4 Phantom II and A-6 Intruder before it transitioned to the F-15 Eagle in 1979. The wing also operated two KC-135 Stratotankers from 1984 to 1991. The history of this program can be traced back to 1978, when then-Chief of Staff General James Mattis organized a gift exchange among Air Force officers and enlisted personnel stationed at MacDill AFB, Florida. Since its inception, the AFDC has been used by service members from a variety of backgrounds. The majority of donations are sourced from uniformed individuals serving in combat zones or deployed for operations abroad. However, there have also been contributions from civilian employees working in Department of Defense installations around the country. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the AFDCprogram and Santa Claus is once again using it as an opportunity to bring holiday cheer to military families across America. This year’s mission is particularly meaningful because toy distribution centers nationwide will be closed on Dec. 26 in observance of National Toy Day. The Colony, Texas is a small town located in east-central Brooks County, Texas, about 15 miles northeast of Lubbock. The town was founded in 1876 by the merger of two smaller settlements, The Colony and Sherman. The town began as a cattle ranch on 110 acres (40 hectares) near the present day intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and FM 1960. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1876 to start a new life after serving in the Mexican-American War. By 1880, the ranch had been enlarged to 280 acres (120 hectares). In 1886, two men named John Hodge and Arthur Spriggs bought land adjacent to the original cattle ranch for $1 per acre (0.50 pesos per hectare). They started a farm that became known as Spriggs Colony. In 1888 they built a school and store on what is now Main Street in The Colony. From there they sold goods door-to-door throughout Brooks County until 1893 when they bought an additional 20 acres (10 hectares) for $2 per acre (0 .75 pesos per hectare). In 1896, Spriggs opened up an grocery store which quickly became one of the leading businesses in The Colony. That same year he also organized and helped found the Brooks County Agricultural Society which later became one of the state's leading agricultural societies with over 1,000 members statewide Sprigg
