Texas City is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Texas City is located on the San Antonio-Bexar County line and has a sister city relationship with Iquitos, Peru. The first European to visit Texas City was Gonzalo Páez de Avila in 1519 on his journey from Mexico to explore what he called Nueva Galicia (New Galicia). He named it Ciudad Real de Texcoco y Chapultepec after his homeland, Spain. Spanish colonists arrived in 1692 and founded San Jacinto Village near what is now downtown Texas City. In 1836, Mexican independence fighters attacked General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army during the Alamo Rebellion and Texcoco was burned by the Mexican forces as they retreated across the U.S.-Mexico border into Chihuahua Territory. In 1845, when Sam Houston became president of America following annexation of Texas by America following its purchase from Mexico, he ordered construction began on the new Capitol building which would later be known as The White House in Austin. On July 6, 1850, Houston defeated Mexican general tried to retake Austin from American forces under General Zachary Taylor at Monterrey Hill outside of town limits; this event markstxcity's first battle ever fought outside its boundaries as well as its only victory over an enemy military force since Santa Anna's time here more than two centuries ago! The old courthouse burned down in 1905 but replaced by a new one that still stands today within walking distance of most of downtown TXC! TxCity also played host to world Expo '68', becoming one of just a few cities in southern US to receive an official pavilion! In 1971 local developer Glen Campbell announced plans for redevelopment of much land east of downtown along I-10 including parts currently occupied by Stennis Air Force Base which would result in tens of thousands jobs creating more than 10upply stores/restaurants/ office space!!! The project received national attention due to then Gov’t policies encouraging suburban sprawl while neglecting inner city needs especially housing & transportation !! Despite numerous obstacles faced by opponents – including eminent domain – Campbell’s plan ultimately came to fruition with mixed results resulting largely from uncontrolled growth rates & lackadaisical planning!!
