Texas City is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the banks of the Colorado River. The population was 8,955 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and is also included within the Dallas–Fort Worth Combined Statistical Area. The original name for Texas City was Cedarville. A post office called Cedarville was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The town site was surveyed by George Waddell in 1884, and designated as a town by an act of Congress on November 4, 1886. The name "Cedarville" originated from a cedar tree that once stood near what is now its downtown square; when Timothy Leary first arrived in Texas City, he found this tree and named it after his home state of Vermont.[1] In 1911, Texas City became organized as a city with a population of 10 people under Mayor John Pemberton;[2] by 1920 its population had grown to 80 people,[3] but again declined during World War II (1939-1945) due to drought and other difficulties caused by war-related production shortages around Amarillo and Lubbock.[4][5] In 1946, following annexation into Austin through annexation proceedings that took place concurrent with the founding of that city's charter,[6][7][8] Deer Park annexed Texas City while still under development as an upscale community designed primarily for oil company executives who would commute between Amarillo (then Midland) and Houston for business purposes;[9][10][11][12] however Deer Park never reached its potential as an outer suburb because access to Interstate 35W made it difficult to develop beyond its current boundaries east of I-35W; nonetheless growth resumed after both towns reorganized themselves as independent cities by 1980 with populations over 100 residents each although both continue to operate together as constituent parts of Austin metropolitan area governance

In 1836, Texas City was founded by the father of current-day Dallas, Sam Houston. The city's founder arrived in Independence, Missouri on a stagecoach and named his new settlement after himself, Texas City. It wasn't until later that year when Houston decided to move the capital of Texas from Austin to Texans City due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Trinity River. The early years of Texan City were difficult with few resources and a small population. However, through hard work and determinationTexansCity grew into one of the most important settlements in all of Texas. In The 1850s, TexanCity became an important center for cotton trade and become known as "the Cotton Capital of the World." During this time, Texans City also played an important role in politics. In 1858, TexansCity elected John Fenton as its first mayor. Fenton served until 1859 when he was replaced by James Kenedy. Kenedy was then elected mayor for a single term in 1861 before being impeached because he failed to repay campaign debts incurred during his previous term as mayor. Kenedy's impeachment led to a period of political unrest which would eventually lead to annexation by Mexico which created more problems for Texan City. However, despite these obstaclesTexansCity continued to grow and prosper under their own government until it merged with neighboring Arlington in 1912
The city of Texas City was founded in 1879 by the Texas Rangers. The city was named after Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas. The city grew rapidly during the early years of the American Revolution and became a major commercial center for Central Texas. In 1892, Texas City experienced its first great fire when a large warehouse building caught on fire. The fire destroyed many businesses and killed several people. After the fire,Texas City experienced a period of growth and development that made it one of the most important cities in Central Texas. During this time,the city developed a strong economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, and trade.
