Terrell is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as an agricultural settlement in 1881 and became a railroad town in 1901. Terrell was named for General George Armstrong Custer during World War II when local residents donated land to help support the war effort and also helped name various military units in the area such as the 101st Airborne Division and 3rd Infantry Regiment. In 1954, Terrell incorporated as a municipality. The first settlers arrived in 1881 from Illinois and Missouri on horseback after being sent information about rich oil resources near Fort Worth by then- Representative James Wright Hogg of Wichita Falls. The group that founded Terrell consisted of twenty-four men including four women: Betsey (née Pogue), Sarah (née Cline), Emma (née White), and Martha Lookout (nee Smith). Of these women only Emma survived to adulthood. In 1881, following successful drilling operations by Jepson Brothers Oil Company, which had leased land around what is now downtown Terrell from Sam Houston National Park Service president John Sitton, many Texans offered their services or money to help with exploration and development of oil reserves located within Midland County. As word spread through society about these new opportunities for ranching, farming,and business development near Fort Worth – particularly given the Panic of 1893 – more settlers started traveling eastward into neighboring Cameron Parish for similar opportunities. By 1882 there were 249 people living in rural Midland County when it merged with San Jacinto County to form Tarrant County on February 17th of that year under Governor Anson Jones’s administration popularly known as “Jonesification” because much of itsrglementation came from him or his appointees rather than from any organized political groups or citizens thereof[1]. The arrival of railroads soon followed suit; by 1892 both Northern Pacific Railway (#7) and Texas & Pacific Railroad (#10) had moved into what is now downtown Terrell along with several other companies looking to establish themselves at this newly developed region[2]. This growth led directly to increased job opportunity for locals as well as newcomers alike due largely to technological advancements brought about by railroad construction; initially crude hand tools were used to build tracks while larger machines did most heavy lifting associated with early oil production[3]. As new industries sprung up throughout Tornado Alley – primarily around Refinery #5 on Buffalo Bayou – so too did businesses begin popping up all over Tarrant County sponsored events like fairs which attracted farmers seeking buyers for their crops while speculators watched developments unfold[4]. With each boom times changed quickly becoming increasingly difficult for small towns like Terrell trying to keep up with industry change even though they often boasted advantages such as access to transportation corridors,[5] water advantages due to long rivers leading into their territory,[6], good soil qualityirens abundant natural gas deposits,[7] etc.; eventually some abandoned towns succumbed completely making way for adjacent suburban municipalities that took advantage of available infrastructure or simply outgrew their original communities entirely.[8] AlthoughTerrell has experienced periods of prosperity both during its earlier years characterized by modest growth rates (.229% per decade from 1910-1915) however also during more recent downturns (-5% per decade since 2000)[9],[10],[11],[12] it has managed To date maintain an overall positive trend maintaining overhired employees levels (2010=100%, 2009=99%, 2008=98%), high standards relatability index ratings (>85%) and public school enrollment (%10yrs old+) above state average despite experiencing numerous economic setbacks throughout its history[13],[14]; today it remains one vibrant communitysupported by energy supplies generated mainly through petroleum production currently accounting for almost 60% ($27M)of total economy generating over $128M annually statewide(15)].
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded by Texans who had fled Mexico. The area that is now Terrell was part of this new nation, and it became a small community with about 100 residents. In 1850, when Texas became an state, Terrell's population increased to around 350 people. In 1881, Terrell incorporated as a town and in 1911 changed its name to Austin.
