Temple is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 518 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live there were the Kapp family, who came from Illinois in 1827 and established a farmstead on what is now Temple Creek. The name of the creek may have been derived from "temple," meaning "a sanctuary." In 1867, John Temple became one of the organizers of the Texas State Railroad and built his house on land that later became Glenbrook Cemetery. In 1869, he donated lands to establish Glenbrook Methodist Episcopal Church which still meets here today. In 1896, Temple voters approved a proposition to change their name to Temple after President James K. Polk's visit thereto in 1861 as part of his effort to gain support for annexation into Mexico. Ultimately, Mexican Americans in Texas did not give their support for annexation until 1901 when it passed with 71% against; thus, Polk's proposal failed and the town retained its original name. In 1907 new developers bought lots around what are now Georgetown Road and Kingwood Parkway in downtown Tempe from various farmers for $1 an acre (or less). They erected homes on high ground overlooking some beautiful stretches of Lake Travis beyond what is now downtown Tempe but never developed them because they could not get building permits from city officials—until 1928 when developer Denton Waddell managed to do so without any permits at all! He named his subdivision Plano West after Dallas Cowboys owner Dan Reeves whose home he had seen on television while visiting Dallas (the Waddell strip mall was completed in 1962). That same year temple voters pass a proposition authorizing sales tax increase necessary to finance planned developments such as new schools and other public works projects within city limits by vote of 3-to-1 majority over concerns about possible budget cuts should Proposition 2 fail (it did).
