This is a reproduction of an article from the Temple, Texas Independent School District online archives. In 1892, a school board in Temple purchased land for a new high school. The first building was completed in 1893 and named after Judge James B. Montgomery of the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court. The cornerstone was laid on October 15th, 1893 by Judge Montgomery and Dr. John Witherspoon of Dallas. A gymnasium and library were also built on the property at this time, as well as a football stadium that could seat 6,000 people. In 1907, theTemple High School Alumni Association donated $5,000 to help maintain and improve the school’s physical infrastructure including new roofs and windows on several buildings on campus. In 1912, another donation from alumni enabled the purchase of two more football stadiums which could seat 10,000 people each: one at 2100 S Lamar Boulevard (now known as McCullough Stadium) and one at 310 S Lamar Boulevard (now known as Wise Stadium). On November 12th 1913 “The Evening News” reported that “the city trustees have voted to spend $10,- 000 to build two additional high schools—one for boys only and one for girls only—in order that they may be equipped with all modern facilities” (Hagopian 199). This increase in enrollment led to increased financial need for both schools; in 1916-17 alone temple paid out over $2,500 in benefits to students who had attended other high schools since its founding. Some students did not have access to these services so their families sent them money back home which helped defray some costs associated with attending another school (Hagopian 199). In 1924 Tempe High School was dedicated adjacent to Temple University; it became known asTemple-Arizona State High Schools when Arizona State joined the United States in August 1957 (Arizona Department of Education website).

Temple, Texas is an incorporated town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first humans to live in what is now Temple were Native American traders who traveled through the area on their way to trade with other cultures. In 1836, a group of Texans led by General Sam Houston founded the Republic of Texas and moved from Houston to find new land for themselves. They selected what is now Hudspeth County as their location for future republics and named it after James Polk's father-in-law and political ally, William Polk. The town was platted in 1847 and named after Col. John Temple (1778-1853), one of the original event commanders in the Mexican War (1846-48). The figurehead of local boosterism was Rear Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry (1784-1845), who served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1850 to 1852 and later as Secretary of State under Franklin D. Roosevelt; he also donated $10,000 towards building a courthouse and schoolhouse in downtown Temple. In 1886, when oil discoveries were made near Temple Creek outside present day Round Rock, TX., Methodists began coming to live there because they saw potential for oil production on site. By 1942 there were over 5500 residents living in Temple Baptist Church alone according to census records . As industry decreased around the country during World War II due to rationing policies, many people left Temple for greener pastures or closer jobs opportunities outside of combat zones – even though most businesses closed during that time period because there simply wasn't enough work available for displaced workers within easy commuting distance from major cities like Austin or Dallas/Fort Worth . However some locals did stay on through hard times such as when electric rates skyrocketed following a storm that destroyed much property around town including churches late in 1955; however business regained its footing only after state & federal stimulus money arrived shortly thereafter In recent years many people have returned home while others have chosen not return due to changing economic conditions or increasing competition from surrounding towns & cities
The first Baptist church in Temple, Texas was organized on July 25, 1836 by John C. Smith and James D. Lane. The first service was held at the home of Isaac Troup. In 1840, a second Baptist church was founded in Temple by Rev. Wm. Henson and Dr. Clements Collier, with the help of Andrew Jackson Polk and Elijah Hickson. On February 15, 1848, a third Baptist church was chartered in Temple by John Sibley with the same name as the previous two churches. The original building still stands today and is used for religious services each Sunday morning from 9am to 11am local time.
