In the early 20th century, Temple became home to several large businesses including Ralston-Purcell Lumber Company and Waco Tire & Rubber Company. However, due to factors such as population growth and technological advances, Temple began to lose its competitiveness in recent decades. Today, the town features a small museum (the Slaton Museum), a small library (the Hargrave Library), and a few active businesses such as Bakersfield Auto Parts and software company Aperture Incorporated.

In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded on the banks of the Rio Grande. The area now known as Temple was part of this new country and had been under Mexican rule for some time. A group of Texans who were dissatisfied with Mexican rule decided to declare themselves a republic in 1836. They named their new nation Temple County after the biblical city of Jerusalem. The county seat was located in what is now San Antonio. The republic lasted only a year before it was overthrown by Mexican forces under General Sam Houston. Houston campaign against Mexico resulted in the capture of Mexico City in 1837, putting an end to Texan independence. As part of Mexico's vassal state, Texas continued to exist until it became an independent country in 1907. The first settlers in what is now Temple County arrived around 1836. Many Methodists from Kentucky built homes and churches there during this time period. By 1840, many people had moved into the township and started businesses such as mills, stores, and mines. By 1850, most residents were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock on their properties. During the early 1800s, Temple County was home to some very important Mormons who led a large population growth throughout central Texas during that time period (especially between Nauvoo and Salt Lake City). In 1830, Brigham Young organized a group called Zion's Camp which travelled throughout Utah Territory looking for a place to settle down where they could practice Christianity without interference from Mexicans or Indians (who inhabited that area at that time). When news reached them about the current situation with Texan independence they decided to move westward instead and establish themselves permanently in what is now Temple County (specifically near San Antonio). More importantly though, they attracted many LDS converts who would eventually help lead Utahto its greatest extent as well as become instrumental players within Mormonism/the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints (CJDL). This movement laid groundwork for future religious movements across North America - something we take for granted today!
