The Army has been Deployed in Temple, Texas for over a hundred years now. The military presence in the area dates back to 1861 when General Sam Houston led an army into Central Texas to fight against Mexican forces. A year after that he gave $10,000 towards construction of Baptist church in what is now Downtown Dallas and Trinity Cemetery opened in 1843 under his direction with Drury as its first pastor In 1845 Rev John Fenton located a log cabin on what would eventually become Main Street within 2 miles (3 km) of today's Temple University campus; this was only one indication that things were moving forward rapidly for the community since there were no schools or churches until well after Fenton's death in 1846! One hundred years later we can see an impressive variety of housing developments have sprung up around town including several million dollars worth of renovations/updates to existing structures just added over the past 5-7 years!
