Temple, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The town was founded in 1847 by John Wesley Temple and his family. The first post office was established in 1848. Temple served as a county judge from 1856 to 1860 and as a U.S. congressman from 1861 to 1863. The city of Temple was incorporated in 1899 and has since been the focal point for local government within the township that includes it. The name "Temple" comes from an early settler's claim that he saw an Indian temple on property now known as Lower Greenville Township (now part of southwest Houston). This eagle-and-plum orchard church was built about 1800 by Isaac Hale Smith on land grants given him by President James Kenedy (son of Major General James Kenedy). When Methodist missionaries arrived in Hudspeth County in 1847, they were soon met with hostility from some residents who considered them heathens coming to proselytize among their people. So the missionaries decided to call their new community "Moses." But when one group of settlers discovered this name had already been used elsewhere within Hudspeth County, they changed it to "Temple" after Rev. John Wesley Temple's father-in-law, Samuel Allison Demarest—an originalhodestone settler in what is now northwest Harris County.—A&P Journal January 7th 1865 p2
