The settlement of Taylor began as a family farm in 1881. By 1907, the town had a population of 350 people and an agricultural store. In 1912, the first school was built in the town and by 1920, there were four schools in Taylor: one for children and three for adults. In 1922, the first Post Office was established in Taylor. Taylor, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that lies on the border of Hidalgo and Nuevo Leon counties. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso-Tijuana, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Taylor was José Francisco de la Garza y Costilla in 1824 as part of his exploration of what would become Mexico City. He named one of his rivers "the Garza" after Don José Francisco de la Garza y Costilla's father who had been governor of Coahuila and Chihuahua before becoming a general in Mexico's army during its War for Independence against Spain. In 1825, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna located Taylor on his march through central Texas when he passed through Lamar County; Santa Anna called it "Taylor" because he saw Arapaho and Kiowa warriors camping near it on the banks of the Salado River. In 1881 United States surveyor James Wickersham identified Taylor as an unpaved road junction in present day Hidalgo County while surveying route 66 east from El Paso across Eagle Pass National Monument and founded nearby Encinitas (now San Diego) as part of that survey project; this location became known as Wickersham Station or Wickersham Prairie due to its resemblance to prairies found in England and North America around that time. The first post office was established at Taylor on October 15, 1865 by mail carrier John Gentry with three letters delivered by ox cart from Tomball overland using wagons travelling down Holcomb Creek Trail which connected San Antonio and Austin via Coleto Valley; Gentry opened up a store there soon after with merchandise bought from farmers along the way between Austin and San Antonio markets.
