There is no one definitive history of coffee, as it has been brewed for centuries and various countries have different traditions. However, some key points to keep in mind include the following: Coffee was first brewed in Mesopotamia around 3000 BC. The Arab world began drinking coffee in the 6th century AD. The Dutch started brewing coffee in 1624 and soon became the world's leading exporter of coffee. In 1837, Frenchman Pierre-Édouard Jeanneret discovered roasted beans on an expedition to Algeria. He brought back two chests of beans with him and named them "Jeanneret's beans". ( Jeanneret also created Boulangerie Parisienne.) Roasted beans were being sold by traders at a premium in Europe until the early 19th century when peasant farmers began producing quality coffees themselves. By 1830, two-thirds of all Turkish exports went to Europe via sea. Coffee became a commodity and production increased along with trade restrictions placed on Arabia by Ottoman Empire officials seeking to control global shipping lanes through which goods might flow into Turkey without paying taxes or duties. This led to significant decreases in price tags for coffee starting from the late 18th century until World War II when prices soared due largely to improvements in transportation infrastructure that made it easier for growers around the world to produce large quantities of high-quality coffee at lower costs
Taylor, Texas, was founded in 1879 by Levi Dickinson and W.D. Payne as a ranch town located on the Edwards Plateau about 25 miles northeast of Austin. The town rapidly became an agricultural center, with large cotton plantations and cattle ranches dotting the landscape. Taylor experienced significant growth during the early years of the 20th century, thanks to its location at one of the key crossroads in America. In 1923, Taylor was renamed for General George Custer after his death in battle near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The 1920s were especially prosperous for Taylor due to Midwestern farmers growing crops and raising livestock there; however, during World War II many residents moved to urban areas due to wartime expansion opportunities. In recent years TXT has regained much of its former glory as a bedroom community for Austin; however, some aspects of its past remain highly important to the city’s identity and economy today. For example, Taylor is home to two major high school football teams (the Rangers and Bastards), several colleges (including UT Austin) and several small businesses (such as Jiffy Lube).
