Taylor was founded in 1827 by a group of men led by Captain James F. Taylor and his brother-in-law, Colonel John H. Anderson. The Town of Taylor was platted on the east side of the Brazos River, about two miles west of present day Huntsville, Texas. In 1830, the town passed into control of the County of Coke and began to grow rapidly around its wharf and trading post. In 1836, when Mexico became a republic, Texas seceded from Mexico and became an independent nation under President Sam Houston. The new government set up its own government in Austin and named it for General Antonio López de Santa Anna (1792-1860), a hero who had helped lead Mexican forces against American forces at San Jacinto in 1836. The new country declared itself an open range state with no property restrictions on people or animals. In 1840, Captain James F. Taylor organized what is now known as the Texas Rangers to protect Indians from white settlers encroaching on their land in central texas The Rangers were successful in preventing many initial settler attacks on the Indians but they eventually fell victim to Apache raids which caused some high profile casualties including Captain Taylor himself In 1849 Governor Lamar appointed Colonel James Hogg as commander of all military affairs forTexas newly admitted Northwest Territory Hogg successfully defended Fort Worth from Indian raiding during the Mexican War while also implementing more severe punitive measures against Native Americans
