Sweetwater is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers to Sweetwater were James and Jane Robertson who arrived in 1836. Their children, John and Sarah Robertson, founded what would become Sweetwater. They started a store and post office in the community which continued until 1903 when it merged with Round Rock (now Austin) to form the Greater Austin metropolitan area. In 1883, General George Crockett visited Sweetwater while on his way to Wichita Falls to lead an expedition against Comanche Indians in central Texas. After leaving Sweetwater he mentioned that he had seen "a beautiful valley" while traveling eastward from Wichita Falls and called it 'the Valley of the Dolls'. This name stuck and is still used today by some people in Sweetwater as a reference to the town's location near Round Rock Lake. Sweetwater was settled by white men primarily because they wanted access to water supplies for their agricultural operations north of downtown Austin along US Highway 183 (later State Highway 183). The first store opened in 1886 by J L Whitehurst which became one of the largest stores in Austin at that time. In 1893, whenAustin incorporated as a city, SweetWater became part of its boundaries as well as being annexed into RoundRock Township within City Limits Of Austin limits - although not officially considered part of that city until 1907 when annexation occurred for political reasons only! In 1940 local resident Garland Hargrave developed land adjacent to round rock lake for use as an air force base during World War II where many military aircraft were built including B-29 Superfortresses production line began here! These days much of this property remains undeveloped but portions have been leased back or purchased by various businesses including tourism!

The first post office in Sweetwater County was established in 1839, and continued operation until it closed in 1865. The first school was organized in 1846 and continued operations until it closed in 1903. The county seat for Sweetwater County was Midland from its establishment until 1911 when it moved to Sweetwater City.
